How To Stop A Puppy From Biting

Getting a new puppy is always exciting, but it is important to ensure proper puppy training. Puppies exhibit a lot of playful behavior, as well as some behavior you may not be pleased with, such as peeing in the house or biting. To stop your puppy from biting, the first thing to do is to understand that it is normal behaviour.

Normally puppy training on this issue comes from the mother who teaches the puppy about biting too hard. As puppies grow older, their biting indicates the mood of the puppy, such as playful or stressful.

If a puppy never had the chance to learn from their mother, such as in cases when a puppy was adopted by its new owners very shortly after it was born, then it may need more puppy training to stop it from biting too aggressively.

Follow these tips to stop your puppy from biting:

  • Introduce your puppy to as many people as possible. The more social activity a puppy knows, the less aggressive it will be as it gets older.
  • When a puppy bites, yell loudly. This will teach the puppy that it is biting too hard. In some cases, this might not work, and an alternative method is to ignore the puppy completely while it is biting, and then resume paying attention to the puppy when it stops.
  • Hand feed your puppy to help it get used to hands near its face. Putting peanut butter or something similar on your fingers will also encourage the puppy to lick, rather than bite.
  • Keep plenty of toys around for the puppy to bite and chew on. This helps to curb any aggressive behavior that could be directed elsewhere. Definitely keep small children away from new puppies that haven’t curbed their biting behavior yet.
